Re: [tech4all] online robotics shop

Well,
Online sales is an excellent idea.
All businesses must go online if they need to survive
into the future.

Have your own website if you want to have a good web
presence.
If you are looking for free hosts, try,
www.xthost.info and www.parhosting.com

It would be better if you manage to buy a domain name.
An Indian Domain (like www.nic.in) costs around 800
Rs.
A commercial domain (like www.yahoo.com) costs 400 Rs.
Buy a package that suits your need and get started.
For domains, i can suggest www.net4india.com

Thats all for now.
If you have any more doubts about maintaining your
website, email me personally.

I hope you will not be using this grouo for your
marketing purposes in the future.
All the best.

Regards,
bharath

hey people.
Me and my friends have decided to open up an online robotics shop.
This would be the first one in India.
We would be selling
-  Atmega (TM) microcontroller based boards(onboard programmer).
- drivers for stepper motors and DC motors.
- sensors, alluminium wheels, gear boxes.
- software...and support.
- dc motors, stepper motors.
Our prime market would be the indian hobbyist, and indian students. hence low cost is mandatory
As it is an online shop we also expect international business.
The prices will be 70% lower than what is offered by other shops.
For example the controller board with online programmer(direct plugin to the computer for programming) will cost sumthing like RS 500.($11).
please do let me know about your views and suggestions, and how you feel the online trade will do.
thank you

[tech4all] Guarantee and warranty

Guarantees or warranties

When buying goods and services, we are all used to being told that what we've bought is covered by a 'guarantee' or 'warranty'. But what does this mean, and what benefit can we expect to receive if we have to make a claim for faulty goods or shoddy workmanship?

What is a guarantee?

A guarantee is most often issued by the manufacturer of goods such as electrical equipment, or by a company that has provided a service, such as replacement windows. It is normally provided free of charge at the time you buy the goods or services. A guarantee is considered in law to be an agreement to provide some benefit for a set period of time in the event of the goods or services being defective. Usually, the guarantee undertakes to carry out free repairs for problems that can be attributed to manufacturing defects. Manufacturers are not legally obliged to provide you with a guarantee, but if they do, it must be in plain English and clearly explain how to make a claim.

What is a warranty?

A warranty provides the same sort of cover that a guarantee does, but often you have to pay extra for it - for example, many electrical stores offer a warranty for cover against the cost of repairs and replacement parts for up to five years after purchase. Effectively, these sorts of warranties are insurance policies, issued by and underwritten by insurance companies. Just to confuse matters, these can sometimes be known as 'extended guarantees' or 'extended warranties'!

Re: [tech4all] guys try to do some research on this

Because AUX, CON, NUL, and PRN are reserved names in
Microsoft Windows, Microsoft does not recommend that
you use these names as site codes when you install
Microsoft Systems Management Server

NUL, AUX, CON, COM1-4, LPT1-3, and PRN are reserved
words used for DOS Devices. These are specified in
IO.SYS and date back from the early MS DOS days.

[tech4all] Top Ten Tips On Beating Bloggers' Block

Top Ten Tips On Beating Bloggers' Block

You know that feeling... the awful sensation that you just can't possibly blog about anything. Nothing inspires you enough. Everything seems too mundane. And, the more you think about blogging, the less you are inclined to blog.

Indeed, if writers can get writers' block, then bloggers can get bloggers' block.

What do you do in moments like these?

Here are some ideas on how you can create weblog content during 'dry times' when you feel as though anything under the sun isn't worth blogging about.

1) Check your Inbox. It's a great place to find fodder for blogging. Answer an email or two in your blog. React to a piece that you read from an email newsletter. Review a link or product that was recommended to you.

2) Start Blog Hopping. We all do it on a regular basis - reading blogs from our blogroll. However, this time, read your favorite blogs with the purpose of finding ideas to write about. Also, try to follow links to weblogs you don't usually visit. Start asking questions like: "What are my fellow bloggers interested in at the moment?" or "What is the most popular topic that people blog about? Do I want to write about it too? Or perhaps, I can blog about something that is not too popular." Doing these things may spark something in your 'blocked' blogging brain.

3) Comment in Your Own Blog. Yes, this idea is related to item #2. When you visit other weblogs, use your own blog when commenting on another blogger's entry that catches your attention. Or, if you post a short comment on someone else's blog, think of ways on how you can expand the idea. Oh, and don't forget to use trackback, if your blogging system allows you to do so.

4) Read, Listen To, or Watch the News. Even if your weblog is not about news, politics or current events, you will still benefit from finding out what's going on in the world. To give you a refreshed view, why not check out news sources that you don't usually refer to? For example, if you're a CNN person, check out BBC this time around. You might even want to try watching news in a foreign language.

5) Give Memes or Collaborations a Go. Even if you're not too crazy about memes or collabs, you might still consider trying it out. Give it a different spin if you like. Say, instead of creating "100 Things About Me" - you can write "100 Things About My Neighbor's Cat."

6) Create Lists. This is an endless source of blogging ideas. Some possibilities: "Top 10" lists, "Favorites" lists, "Worst of the Bunch" lists, "Things To Do" lists, "Wish" lists, etc. These lists may be on any given topic such as movies, books, music, people, paintings, food, sports, and activities, among many other things.

7) Play Games, Answer Surveys, or Take Quizzes. If you're not the sort of person who likes posting quiz or survey results as weblog entries, remember that you're not limited to the "usual route" of blog quiz-taking (i.e., find a quiz, respond to questions, and post the results as a blog entry). For example, if you take the quiz: What's Your Blogging Personality?, you can write about particular items asked in the quiz. Or, you can write about other ideas you may have for a game, survey, or quiz for bloggers.

8) Blog at Random. There are different ways you can blog at random. One way to do this is to pick up a dictionary or encyclopedia, open to a random page, and then write about a word, phrase or sentence that you find on that particular page. Another way is to flip through one of your photo albums (or boxes, if they're not in albums yet), and pick a random photo to write about - be it a memory, a fictional idea, or a non-fiction piece. You can also turn on the TV or the radio, then write about the first thing you watch or hear about. Another thing you might like to try is to find a journal writing software and/or book with creative writing prompts and pick a topic at random to write about.

9) Be a Sleuth! Are there things that you've always wondered about but never found the opportunity to get the facts? You might have asked yourself one or more of the following questions at one time or another: "How do you build an igloo?" "What are the different species of spiders?" or "Who is the richest woman in the world?" Well, now might be a good time to get your detective or research skills in to action. Check search engines, almanacs, and other sources of information. Then, start blogging your findings!

10) Do Something New. If not something new, any activity other than blogging or computer-related stuff will do. Sometimes, all you need is a little break. Go to the mall, watch a movie, go for a walk, visit the beach, or call a friend. Just get out there and live your life.

There are other ways to come up with blogging content other than the ones mentioned here. Go ahead and experiment! Just remember that living a full life is a surefire way to kick bloggers' block out of the picture.

Re: [tech4all] Before buying a New HDD, check these factors.....

Thanks Surendiran,

This was very informative.  Especially, the fact that 1GB = 1000000000 bytes and not 1024*1024*1024 was very new.  I searched for and found few more evidance of this before I believed in it.  For those who still are trying to validate this, check out

Thanks for sharing.

Subject: Before buying a New HDD, check these factors.....

Notes: Before buying a Hard Disk.

1. Check for RPM - higher the rpm , higher the data transfer rate.

ATA / SATA HDD - Go for 7,200 rpm . Don't go for 5,400 rpm.

SCSI = >10,000 rpm

2. Don't do low level partition frequently. U can do normal windows format. but a HDD can withstand max of 20 low level partitioning.

3. check for warranty.

4. Check for protective sheild at the bottom of the HDD.

5. Never use the HDD verticaly, unless it is specifically manufactured for using vertically. Hitachi HDD can be used vertically.

6. GB mentioned in HDD = 1000 MB, not 1024 MB.

7. If u r buying new HDD for old motherboard, check whether the max HDD capacity supported by ur motherboard BIOS. Even if doesn't higher capacity HDD, still u can use it with ur old motherboard. U need to use the jumber for the pins - that specifies "limit my HDD capacity".

Eg: ur motherboard supports only max HDD size of 80 GB, still u can use 120GB HDD with ur old motherboard - as per the above mentioned method. The will detect the 120GB as 80GB, but windows will show u all the 120GB.

8. Do u know , the life of HDD is 5 yrs for a frequent usage [ I had  forgot the hour usage per day ].

9. If u partition the HDD, say it is 20GB, if u calculate the total size from all the partitions ,it will come around only 18.5GB. where is the remaining 2 GB gone???

As windows uses 1 GB = 1024 MB, and HDD manufactures ues 1 GB = 1000 MB, u will lose 480 MB in a 20 GB harddisk.

And, When u partition the harddisk, the ramining space of around 1 GB is taken for partition and File Allocation table.

That's y u will see only 18.5 GB out of 20GB Hard disk.
