[tech4all] Lost E-mail
Members,
I had a laptop linked to a desktop both using Windows 98. Both
equipped with Microsoft office.
I had set up a briefcase account up on both systems to update Outlook
e-mail between the two systems.
I transferred an Outlook sub-file from the desktop to the laptop. I
literally moved the file from one to the other so that it no longer
existed on the desktop.
Later on I updated the briefcase account in the wrong direction and
overlayed the files on the laptop wiping out all the references to
the sub-file. In desperation to recover I eliminated the briefcase
link between the two systems. The archive files were also located in
the briefcase link. System searches for *.pst files on both systems
fail to reveal any of the relevant files.
Am I up the creek for the e-mails both sent and recieved that were
lost? Is there anything I can do to recover the lost mail. I have
tried to use Norton recycle-restore functions without sucess.
I am careful to leave copies of all recieved e-mail on my internet
providers server. I have other mirror image computers that I
periodically use and have opened their Outlooks and have been able to
update their files from the time of the last access date with no
problems. I know that the recieved e-mails are on the server due to
my intentional failure to delete them on download.
My question is that the provider says that I can open a new account
or user in Outlook on the same computer. that is fresh and be able to
redownload all of my old received mail again. I have tried to do
this and seem to be unable to reintialize Outlook. The copies I make
have the old dates on them. How can I do what I want without
screwing up what I have now. I just don't seem to have a new copy of
Outlook laying around. Suggestions?
Thanks for any help with the problem.
